Early Years – World Book Day

Activities for World Book Day 2nd March

Early years joined in the schools activities for World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March.

All the children came dressed as their favourite book character, they all looked amazing!

The adults joined in too, reading their favourite books to the class. A big thank you to some children from Year 4 who came to read to nursery the Cat in the Hat, and to Year 6 who acted out the story of Little Red Riding Hood to Reception.

Spring Holiday Activities- 1st April

Easter Egg Hunts and Balloon Race

The early Easter this year has given the school the opportunity for some fun activities, but it would not be complete without the traditional Easter Egg Hunt and Balloon Race.

Different clues were placed around the dell and field for all the classes. It was lovely to see Parents and Grandparents joining in the fun. A special mention to the many Year 6 children who supported some of the younger children.

After lunch everyone went out onto the field to release the many coloured balloons for our balloon race. I wonder how far the winner will drift this year?

Violent volcanoes

All of the Home Learning models that have come in so far have been fantastic.

We have had various explosions and eruptions taking place from a diverse range of volcanoes

Some were more destructive than others and needed to be demonstrated outside of our new classroom.  Shooting molten rock, bubbling lava, gases and ash clouds into the air.

Creative Maths

Year 5 have produced some wonderful maths through art. They have been very creative in lessons. In their last activity, they explored parabolic curves. The children had to follow a pattern and join selected dots to create their design.

An Anglo-Saxon invasion

On Thursday the 7th May Markyate Village school was invaded by Anglo Saxons. The Year 4 class had dressed up and were taking part in a workshop to find out more about the Anglo Saxons. The day was run by Mark from Portals to the Past who had brought with him a great haul of weapons and artefacts from the time. The children recreated a scene from a great hall making sure they sat in the correct places from the Lord and his Lady down to the young warriors. They would have done all manner of things in these halls, sorted out crimes, feasted, celebrated different occasions and told many stories around a central fire.

Challenge Sports

On Wednedsay 12th March, Year 5 took part in a Tag Rugby Workshop. They had great fun and really improved their skills. Challenge Sports told Miss Esom what a polite and hard-working class Year 5 had been – well done children!

Maths Event

On Tuesday 19th November, the Happy Puzzle Company will be visiting our school to work with all the children. Children from Reception to Year 6 will take part in a Puzzle Challenge Day. Each year group will participate in problem solving and thinking skills activities which will also involve team building and cooperation.

There will also be a parent and family session after school between 3.40-5.10pm. You are warmly invited to attend. During this time, the company will have their Puzzle Shop open so that you can purchase items (perhaps even potential Christmas presents!) if you wish.

Many thanks to FOMs who have funded the majority of this event which will be a fabulous learning experience for the children.

I hope to see many of you there.
