On Monday the 30th of November Years 3 and 4 went to the Safety Centre in Milton Keynes to learn about potential dangers, how to avoid them and what to do in emergency situations.
We were taken around the centre and had the chance to explore 12 different scenarios. These ranged from everyday hazards at home to the dangers of railway lines and electricity substations.
We learnt just how dangerous railway lines are and why you should stay well back from the platform edge.
How to shop sensibly and safely.
We looked at the importance of road safety. Being seen and seeing what is around you.
Building sites are full of hazards. If you are ever invited on to one, make sure you are wearing the correct protective clothing.
Every child had the opportunity to make a 999 emergency call. We had to ask what service we needed and tell the person clearly what had happened and exactly where we were.
Even with all these dangers out there, the most common place to have an accident is in your home. We looked at all the potentially hazardous things in our homes too.
We learnt about the damage that fire can cause. How quickly it can spread and what to do in an emergency.
Get out. Call the fire brigade out. Stay out.
Make sure drivers have seen you before you step onto the crossing!

We learnt how to put people in the recovery position to keep them comfortable and stop them from choking while help arrives.

Can you imagine experiencing an earthquake or being caught in a tornado?
All of the Home Learning models that have come in so far have been fantastic.
We have had various explosions and eruptions taking place from a diverse range of volcanoes
Some were more destructive than others and needed to be demonstrated outside of our new classroom. Shooting molten rock, bubbling lava, gases and ash clouds into the air.
In science we have been exploring the 3 different states of materials.
Water exists quite commonly in all 3 states – ice, water and water vapour
We predicted what would happen to the state, the shape, the colour and the temperature of ice if coloured ice cubes were left in a cup at room temperature.
We devised an experiment to test the effect that different liquids have upon our teeth. As nobody was willing to use their own teeth as a subjuct for the tests, we decided that the shell of a hard boiled egg was a similar substance to the enamel on our teeth.
With the eggs representing our teeth, we put 6 eggs into different liquids and left them in sealed containers. To keep the test fair, we used similar sized eggs, the same amount of each liquid and left them in the same location for the same amount of time.
The only variable we changed was the type of liquid.
We used water, milk, cola, orange juice, lemon juice and vinegar.
After a week in the liquids we looked at the egg shells and determined how much damage had been done to each.
