Aztec Day

On 16th January, Year 5 ‘ignited’ their Aztec topic.

We started the day by becoming Aztec warriors and lots of the children has their faces painted.

We also looked at the work of Picasso and how he used different techniques to create masks. The children created their own Aztec masks using pastels. Can you see the exaggerated features?

The highlight of our day was preparing dishes to eat. The class made salsa and guacamole. We then tasted these with tortillas and corn on the cob. Afterwards, we tasted chocolate with a high cocoa content and some that even included chilli! We finished the day with a lovely mug of hot chocolate!

We found out lots about our topic and wrote questions about things we would like to find out more about. The whole class are very excited about finding out more!

Maths Measuring

Year 5 have worked very hard this week during their measurement topic. We have been looking at length in particular. Although we have worked hard, we have had lots of fun!

We have worked outside, solved tricky problems, converted measurements, played tactical games with our learning partners and much more! Year 5 are now measuring experts!

Mrs Rhodes

Roald Dahl Day

On Tuesday 13th September, Year 5 celebrated Roald Dahl Day. It was 100 years since his birth. We dressed up as famous characters from his books and some of us came dressed in his favourite colour – yellow! During the day we read some of Roald Dahl’s stories, found out about his life, wrote about our dreams and designed our own chocolate bar. The children took a quiz home for a challenge!

IGNITE – Mobile Planetarium

On Wednesday 7th September, Peter Bassett visited our school. He came with his mobile planetarium (which is 6.5m in size). The whole class could fit inside and it was so exciting. It got very dark at times! Mr Bassett showed us lots of different presentations – stars and constellations, moon phases, our solar system and much, much more! It was a wonderful start to our topic and we have already learned a huge amount of information.

Welcome back!

Year 5 have started the new term exceptionally well! The children are trying hard to follow new routines and are working hard. They have already produced some excellent work and I am looking forward to the term (and year) ahead. Well done Year 5 – keep it up!

Our class ‘Meet the Teacher’ session is on Tuesday 13th September so I hope to see many of you there. If you cannot attend, I will send the written information home.

Chinese New Year

On Monday 8th February, we celebrated Chinese New Year. The children took part in a carousel of activities in classrooms across the school. The children wore red and gold and some even dressed in their Chinese wear. We also enjoyed a special lunch menu!

Money estimates

Year 5 made estimates about the money our class collected for the NSPCC by taking part in their Number Day. The children came up with very good strategies to estimate how much our coins were worth.

Our class raised £20.70.
