Provision in Year 1
Welcome to Year 1!
Year 1 are now in mixed classes with Year 2 but are still taught in age groups for parts of their learning to ensure they make as much progress as possible over the year.
Children in Year 1 follow the National Curriculum 2014 with a skills and topic based approach. The higher expectations of the new curriculum are being implemented alongside child initiated learning opportunities where children apply their learning in social play situations. Children will occasionally work as a whole class but their learning is continuously scaffolded through focused group tasks and individual support. The British values of democracy, mutual respect and tolerance, individual liberty and rule of law underpin the class ethos where high expectations are set and children learn collaboratively alongside the whole school. Please see our termly plan for more information about specific subject areas. Outdoor learning is a vital part of the children’s school experience all year round so please make sure your child is equipped with wellies and a waterproof coat to make the most of our wonderful grounds whatever the weather!
If you have any queries about your child’s learning please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak to us. If you could also offer any help in class we would be delighted to welcome you. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you are available.
No two weeks are the same in Year 1! However, we do follow a timetable that enables us to ensure the children enjoy a rich and varied learning experience. This timetable includes FRED (Focused Reading Every Day) where the children work in small groups to read and explore texts; ACT (arithmetic, calculation and tables) which is designed to enhance the children’s mental maths skills; Check and correct time for the children to reflect on and respond to the feedback given; and we end the week with Golden Time where children earn the opportunity to choose an activity as a reward for their hard work throughout the week.
Reading is supported by the Oxford Reading Tree scheme, as well as Scholastic Guided Readers in class. Phonics is planned around Letters and Sounds and Phonicsplay.co.uk
Our PE days are Monday and Thursday so please ensure your child has kit in school on these days.
In order for you to be able to support your children’s learning in school please see the homework grid in the home learning journal each week. Spellings will go home every Friday and be tested the following Thursday. At the moment, a different maths activity will be supplied each week in order for the children to consolidate the skills they have been learning during the week. We also hope you can find time to read with your child every day and record it in their reading records which should come to school daily, this enables your child to earn their reading certificates. Children have an opportunity to change their reading books every day if they wish or keep them until they feel they are ready to choose another from their levelled reading scheme.
