Year 1- Opal, Topaz and Garnet Classes

Provision in Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Children in Year 1 follow the National Curriculum 2014 with a skills and topic based approach. In Mathematics , the children are following the ‘Herts Essential Maths’ programme which includes examples of how concrete and pictorial representations can benefit pupils’ learning as well as other mastery techniques. The higher expectations of the new curriculum are being implemented alongside child initiated learning opportunities where children apply their learning in social play situations. Children will work as a whole class but their learning is continuously scaffolded through focused group tasks and individual support. The British values of democracy, mutual respect and tolerance, individual liberty and rule of law underpin the class ethos where high expectations are set and children learn collaboratively alongside the whole school. Outdoor learning is a vital part of the children’s school experience all year round so please make sure your child is equipped with wellies and a waterproof coat to make the most of our wonderful grounds whatever the weather!

If you have any queries about your child’s learning please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak to us. If you could also offer any help in class we would be delighted to welcome you. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you are available.

New Curriculum Maths Year 1

No two weeks are the same in Year 1! However, we do follow a timetable that enables us to ensure the children enjoy a rich and varied learning experience. This timetable includes: daily targeted phonics sessions in focused groups; daily Mathematics and English sessions; topic based lessons; PE lessons; and we end the week with ‘Show and Tell’ and Golden Time where children earn the opportunity to choose an activity as a reward for their hard work throughout the week.

Reading is supported by the Oxford Reading Tree scheme, as well as Scholastic Guided Readers in class. Phonics is planned around Letters and Sounds and

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday so please ensure your child has kit in school on these days.

Home Learning

In order for you to be able to support your children’s learning in school, please see the Home Learning grid (three topic based activities to be completed over the half term) in the Home Learning journal. As well as this, there is a grid of maths activities (one activity per week)  to consolidate the skills the children have been learning. These need to be completed in order. Spellings will go home every Friday and be tested the following Friday. We also hope you can find time to read with your child every day and record it in their reading records which should come to school daily, this enables your child to earn their reading certificates. Children have an allocated reading day to change and choose two books to read at home, as well as be tested on their flashcards.
