Welcome to Year 2!
Year 2 are now in mixed classes with Year 1 but are still taught in separate groups for parts of their learning to ensure they make as much progress as possible over the year.
Children in Year 2 follow the new National Curriculum 2014 with a skills and topic based approach. The higher expectations of the new curriculum are being implemented alongside practical opportunities where children apply their learning in real life situations. Children will increasingly be expected to work and reflect independently, but support will always be given to those who need it. The British values of democracy, mutual respect and tolerance, individual liberty and rule of law underpin the class ethos where high expectations are set and children learn collaboratively alongside the whole school. Please see our termly plan for more information about specific subject areas. Outdoor learning is a vital part of the children’s school experience all year round so please make sure your child is equipped with wellies and a waterproof coat to make the most of our wonderful grounds whatever the weather!
If you have any queries about your child’s learning please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak to us. If you could also offer any help in class we would be delighted to welcome you. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you are available
Year 2 routines
Our timetable varies from week to week but Year 2 children will usually have English and Maths lessons in the morning, followed by a topic based lesson in the afternoon such as Science, History, Geography or Art. Children have two PE sessions a week as well as Computing, RE and PSHE. Phonics is taught first thing every morning after check in circle time.
During the course of a week, children take part in Minute Maths working towards their timetables certificates.
In addition to this, the class complete Big Maths activities which work towards quick recall of number facts.
Children have spelling lists sent home every Friday ready for their spelling test on Thursday.
Golden time runs on Friday afternoons, where children engage in activities such as chess and other board games, art and creative activities.
Children have an opportunity to change their reading books every day if they wish or keep them until they feel they are ready to choose another from their levelled reading scheme. Please continue to support your child with daily reading at home and aim for the reading certificates.

You should also send a letter to inform us when your child has a medical or dental appointment.
