Welcome to Markyate Village School and Nursery.

Markyate Village School and Nursery serves the village of Markyate which is situated close to St. Albans. We are currently a single form entry school but we are growing fast and will soon become a one and a half form entry school with mixed age classes throughout. Since September 2015 we have taken 45 children into Reception. We have a  combined Foundation Stage for Nursery and Reception. Every class has a spacious classroom, often with an adjoining area for working on projects requiring more space or for small groups to work in with additional support. Every class has access to outdoor learning space and our new outdoor classroom, our Sunshine Room.

We aim to provide every child with a safe, caring, learning environment where they can all reach their full potential. Our school motto is: Dream…Believe…Succeed. This is at the centre of all we do at school believing that every child should have aspirations, that by believing in themselves and others they can achieve their dream.

ICT and computing play a key role in school as we prepare our children to be successful in our technological future. We now have a number of laptops and iPads in school for the children to fully access ICT as a support to their learning.

We have a strong team of talented and enthusiastic staff with the highest expectations for all children. They are constantly striving for improvement and to ensure that your children get the best possible start in their education.

We are extremely fortunate to have extensive grounds offering lots of opportunities for learning and play. The playing fields are ideal for all forms of sport that we teach throughout the year; there is a lovely dell area with an amphitheatre and outdoor stage in which the children play at break and lunchtimes, have great fun sliding down in the snow and gather in for assemblies during the summer. We have introduced ‘welly’ days in every class so that all children can get full use out of both indoor and outdoor learning experiences. We have now added a new activity zone climbing frame for the older children.

We are proud of our strong links with the community. Parents, Governors and visitors are frequently seen in school helping the children in a variety of ways. Groups of children often visit local shops, allotments, places of religious interest and other schools to enhance their learning. Each class also participates in special trips or learning days to ‘IGNITE’ the children’s learning; exciting and motivating them to ask questions and discover for themselves. We have links to a number of support groups including LINK Family services and Redbourn and Villages Children’s Centre.

Children are provided with lovely hot or cold meals, in our comfortable dining room, prepared by our very dedicated and experienced kitchen staff. We also offer breakfast club every day from 7:50am which is very well received. There is a range of after school and lunchtime clubs run in school, some of which are supported by the Sports Premium. We currently offer an after school club on Mondays and Tuesdays in addition to other activity clubs. Places in our clubs are offered to Pupil Premium children at a subsidised rate if required.

We would love to show you around our school and tell you more about what we do. If you are interested in a school place please contact us as indicated above.

We look forward to meeting you.
